How Do I Start Making Money As An Affiliate?

When you first took a look at affiliate marketing, the concept seemed so simple you figured you give it a shot. Nothing wrong with that, after all it doesn’t really cost anything to get started or so you thought. Now you’re at it for awhile and you’re thinking, where’s all this money people are talking about?

If you want to start making money as an affiliate, you ‘re gonna have to keep it simple. I know, easier said than done right? Actually it can be if you can wrap your mind around focusing on doing basic things over and over again.

As an affiliate you have to find a product people are looking for and sell it to them, not too difficult right? So how come it’s not working? There are a couple of reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

One, maybe nobody’s looking for the product your offering. Let’s face it, no matter how you promote it, if nobody is looking for it, you ain’t gonna sell it. Did that sound a little hard? Sorry, but it’s the truth.

The other reason that comes to mind is maybe you’re not driving enough traffic to your offer to begin with. Sales is a numbers game, plain and simple and if your numbers are low then you can’t reasonably expect to make any money.

If you want to start making money as an affiliate, stick to the basics. Promote products people are looking for and take a focused approach to driving traffic. Don’t try to do it all, because you’ll only be shooting yourself in the foot.

  • I think another key is that you have to really believe in the product you are promoting. A bonus is if you are using the product in a way that someone can see the results, such as being an affiliate for the WordPress Thesis premium theme, and using that theme on your site. When readers can see the results and your good reviews, it makes them more likely to purchase.

That’s an interesting point and it can play a role in the level of conviction you express when promoting something. As a matter of fact if you believe that what you’re selling will help people, then you’ll do whatever you have to, to drive as much traffic to your offer as possible.

However there still has to be a market for it though. If I believe strongly in a product that there is no real market for, then all I’m doing is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. If the ships going down, no amount of belief in the world is gonna keep it afloat. If I’m pushing the Thesis theme as per your example and nobody cares, I still ain’t gonna sell it.

Did that make sense? I like the Thesis theme by the way, Jack Humphrey over at Friday Traffic Report just did a very cool video, showing beginner and intermediate bloggers how to make money with it. I’ve used that theme for other blogs.

Thanks for bringing up that good point and voicing your opinion. Stop back anytime 🙂

I’ll leave the lights on 😉
