Profitable List Building – Are the right people opting in to your list?


If there was one single most profitable activity that would benefit your internet marketing business in the long run, it would have to be list building.

While you may be able to attract a large number of visitors to your website or blog, having a list of subscribers gives you an opportunity to present your offers on multiple occasions and increase revenue from the same visitors.

With the contact details of your visitors in your possession you are in a good position to develop a relationship with your list and market related products and services on a regular basis. The best way to do this is to treat your visitors who have chosen to optin to your list with respect so that they are not put off by your marketing messages.

A key point to consider is whether or not you’re getting the right people on your list in the first place.

A very common strategy for building a list is to offer something of value for free to attract subscribers, but you may want to consider what kind of subscribers these would be.

Are they just freebie seekers who will never purchase any of your related offers or are they real customers who understand that developing and maintaining a subscriber list has associated costs, which are usually offset by advertisements and the sales of related products and services?

Depending on the niche you are in, this could present a problem, but there are some simple solutions that can help you to build a list of the kind of subscribers who are willing to support your business.

One strategy that works really well for some marketers is to create a short report or eBook and sell it for a very low price. This strategy separates the freebie seekers from the real buyers who are looking for an answer to their concern or problem.

By purchasing the low cost ebook, these buyers are in effect raising their hands and saying they want information. This creates future opportunities for the marketer to sell them other related offers as well as provide more in depth information down the road.

To put this information in more practical terms, let’s say you have a website that offers information about how to lose 10 pounds before swimsuit season. Instead of giving all of your information away for free on your website, you have two options.

You can write a free report that people can get when they subscribe to your list or, you could charge $3, $5 or $7, for it.

By selling the report at a low price, you’ll know that the buyers signing up for your list are so interested in getting information about that topic that they are willing to pay for it. Now you have the most important ingredient to a successful internet business and that is a list of actual BUYERS instead of just interested people who are only interested in getting free information.

List building is one of the most important parts of an internet marketer’s business. It’s worth it to take the time and really think about each niche and what will work best for that particular market. While a free report may be the very best thing to use in one niche, it might not work at all in another.

  • Another great thing about selling or giving away ebook reports is that you have the opportunity to make recommendations by suggesting additional products within the ebook. You can link back to your own products that you are selling or as most do link to an affiliate product.

    But I do agree that the visitor who buys the report is best as they are already proven to be buyers. It makes it that much easier to sell them complimentary products in the future. Whereas statistics show that a visitor who signs up to your list to obtain a free product requires 7 to 8 follow up emails before they make their first purchase from you. From my own experience 30-45% of these signups are utilizing burn addresses and are unresponsive to follow up mailings to the point they do not even open the email.
